How you know a spring has failed

Most people hear it first: one loud crack from the garage, then a door that won't lift or that rises a few inches and drops.

  • The door won't rise, or rises only with a hard pull.
  • One side sits lower than the other.
  • A gap shows in the coil above the door.
  • A cable hangs slack.
  • The opener runs, but the door stays put.

Which spring you have

A torsion spring is a tight coil on a shaft above the door opening. An extension spring is long and runs along each side of the door, above the horizontal track.

You don't need to know which one before you call. Both can seriously hurt someone when they break or when someone tries to adjust them.

What to leave alone

Springs and cables hold enough force to badly hurt someone. Don't adjust, unwind or replace them yourself. If one is broken, leave it alone and stay clear of the door.

Don't run the opener against a broken spring. Don't pull the red release cord with the door raised, because the door can come down. Don't pry at the bottom brackets, which hold cable tension.

Keep children and pets out of the garage.

What to ask the contractor

Ask whether it replaces both springs on a two-spring door, and whether the job includes checking the cables, drums and rollers.

Ask how the price is set and how long the repair is warranted. Get the answers in writing.

Spring questions

Can I get the door open to move the car?

Not safely if a spring is broken. The door will be very heavy and could drop. Tell the contractor the car is inside.

Do I need a new door?

Usually not. The door itself is often fine. Repair or replace covers when it isn’t.
